European ministers sign statement to strengthen and extend carbon pricing in Europe
At COP24, nine European Ministers signed a statement to strengthen and extend carbon pricing in Europe. The signees affirmed that carbon pricing is critical to send an economic signal towards low-carbon development and, to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement, that greater carbon pricing ambition is required. The countries agreed that supporting policies play a role in facilitating effective carbon pricing, ensuring a just transition, and creating “high-value jobs in low-carbon sectors”. The statement emphasizes that European cooperation could facilitate more effective carbon pricing.
The final paragraph reads: “In order to accelerate the pace of the low-carbon transition, the signatories commit to work together to support the uptake of a set of broader and more ambitious carbon pricing measures, while realising the benefits of increased cooperation and taking into account the role of supporting policies and measures.”
